The Use Of Radiography in Root Canal Treatment

The nerve of the tooth when infected leads to root canal problem where the pulp is damaged.  During the procedure of root canal,  the tooth is repaired and cleaned by removing the nerve and the pulp of the tooth.  Radiography which is an imaging technique which uses the electromagnetic radiation other than visible light helps in the treatment of root canal.

The process of root canal treatment takes time when the tissue from the tooth is removed to clean and repair the whole system. The treatment of root canal is important so that your tooth survives for a longer period of time without causing you the trouble of going through severe pain.

Endodontics which is an important branch of dentistry where the diagnosis and the treatment is mostly done through the use of radiographs.  The success of the root canal treatment is influenced by a lot of factors such as the proper diagnosis of the pulp, root canal anatomy, obturation and canal preparation.

Compared with other diagnostic tests, radiographs have proven to be very reliable. A clinician must be well-versed with the technique of examining and identifying the anatomical areas and their variations reflected on the radiograph.  Images on the radiograph reflect the shadow as well as normal anatomical structures must be known by the clinician before finding out the cause for abnormalities.

However, it is not always crystal clear for clinicians to observe and study the changes in the radiographs. Experiments have proved that generally the interpretations which are moderate in nature can be understood by the dental practitioners but when changes in the radiographs were of a mild degree they were more likely to be missed by the practitioner. Therefore, it can be observed that the credibility of the radiograph is highly dependent on the knowledge of the practitioner in the cause of identifying and studying it well.
An x-ray can supply lots of surprising information about the tooth and its various dimensions. In order to understand the x-rays one should follow some of the tips give below

Each radiograph must show a clear picture of the apices of the roots. The apices of the teeth must be 3mm away from the radiograph’s border.

Two or three radiographs must reflect images at different angles.  A single radiograph can also show an accomplished image but the second and third one may add attention to other discrepancy relative to the others.

A vertical-on diagnostic film should be taken so that the x-ray reflect the facial aspect and the long axis of the tooth.  It is very important the images are taken at particular angles and any discrepancy leading to it may cause a lot of problems in understanding the reasons for the treatment.

Radiographs are the modern day imaging technique which is widely being utilized by the dentists in the root canal problems. However, patients must also have a knowledge of the technique involved in the problem so that they can verify it with other dentists and can get good suggestions for effective  treatment.

Implication of Diagnostic Radiology

About Diagnostic Radiology

Radiology is a medical speciality which makes use of imaging technology for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that are visualised inside the body. Various imaging technologies are used during the diagnosis through radiology. Some of them are mentioned as X-ray radiography, ultrasound, CT i.e. computed tomography etc. Under the training of diagnostic radiology, doctors are trained in order to obtain, observe and then analyse various medical outcomes on the basis of images. Various kind of diseases that are not visible through naked eyes are observed by using this technology with the help of CT Angiogram, ultra sounds, X-ray etc. Later the diseases are diagnosed as per the conditions. People who are involved in this profession are known as radiologists. The radiologists are trained in the way other medical professionals are. Graduation from an authorised medical institute is a compulsion for all radiologists. A state licensing exam is also conducted followed by an internship for a fixed period of time. Once the whole procedure gets over then trainee can choose the field of radiology he wants to continue. Various fields are described as given.

Oncology Radiology

Specialists that are known as radiation oncologist are involved in the treatment of cancer. Various ionizing radiations are used in this treatment such as radionuclide and megavoltage X-ray. Radiation oncologists are known to work along with other physicians such as internal medicine specialists, surgical oncologists etc. They combined form a multi-disciplinary cancer diagnostic team.

Emergency Purpose Radiologists

Emergency cases are comprised of broken bones, head traumas, fractures etc. When a patient experiences a sudden pain the disease is analysed by radiology technology. The two essential parts of this technology are diagnostic X-ray and MRI. Emergency rooms are available in hospitals for such kind of treatments.

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is also known as surgical radiology. Such diagnostic radiology involves the treatment of almost all the organs with the help of image processing technique. Least invasive techniques are used in interventional radiology which minimises the risk to the diseased and subsequently improves the health of a patient. It helps in managing the pain and assisted by biopsies as well as fluid drainage. A diagnostic process involved in this technique is fluoroscopy. A fluid is transferred throughout the effected parts by the radiologist and then the analysation of the passage is done. This is known for the accurate analysis of the diseases.

Apart from these many other are also available which are the result of advancing technology. The use of diagnostic radiology has increased a lot because no other technique can analyse and detect the problem inside body so well. The two main radiographic images performed are projection radiography and fluoroscopy. They are less expensive as compared to 3-D tomography. The role of radiologists is increasing day by day with a great extent. Not only this technique of diagnostic radiology helps in better analysation but also helps in decreasing the workload in hospitals. In the near future, it will be available in almost all the hospitals.
